Back Channel Assistant: BCA & Instructor Expectations
You and the student providing BCA support have different reasons for participating in the BCA program. Underlying expectations have been established for both you and the student.
Expectations of the BCA:
- Meet with the instructor before the start of the semester to discuss the specific BCA related support tasks, confirm the class meeting schedule, establish communication protocols, etc.
- Complete the BCA Orientation Course.
- Know how to use the web-conference tool and specific features and functions of the tool.
- Carry out the BCA tasks that were discussed and agreed upon.
- Model high-quality standards of online etiquette by being polite, respectful, and helpful.
- Provide advance notice to the instructor if late or are unable to attend a class meeting.
Expectations of the Instructor
- If delivering a BlendFlex (BLFX) course, know how to use the podium system and enable/disable cameras, mics, and other peripheral equipment to ensure participation equity for remote students.
- Meet with the BCA before the start of the semester to discuss the specific BCA related support tasks, confirm the class meeting schedule, establish communication protocols, etc.
- Provide direction and guidance to the BCA as needed
- If a BCA is available to assist you, recognize that there is a chance that the BCA may not be available for the entire semester.
- Select the web conferencing tool to use. The Meeting feature of MS Teams is recommended, however other tools such as Canvas Conferences can be used.
- Know how to use the web conferencing tool of your choice
- Setup the class meetings in the chosen web conferencing tool, ensuring the required settings are enabled (e.g., enroll/invite students into the meetings so all students can attend, enable the recording feature so it is available when the meeting begins)
- Invite the BCA into the meetings as a guest, and promote to moderator or equivalent role.
- Recognize and respect the limited scope of the support provided by the BCA. The BCA is not a replacement for FGCU Helpdesk support but can assist the instructor with contacting FGCU Helpdesk if an issue with the podium, camera, mic, etc. were to occur.
In addition to these expectations, it's a good idea for you and the student to share any individual expectations you have of one another.
